If your cat has been previously litter trained and has now started going elsewhere there could be an underlying health condition present.
The main diseases of geriatric cats are kidney disease, hyperthyroidism and diabetes.
All three cause increased thirst and in turn increased urination which may cause the cat to urinate elsewhere other then the litterbox.
A urinary tract infection can also result in inappropriate urination.
Behaviour changes associated with hyperthyroidism can also cause the cat to urinate and defaecate inappropriately.
If the stool is soft or liquid gastrointestinal disease could be present.
To rule these problems in or out a full veterinary physical exam is required followed by a complete blood panel and urinalysis, and also a faecal exam.
I suspect this is the most likely cause in your case as the behaviour first started while you were on vaccation which would have been stressful to the cat.
The fact that she was hiding under the bed when the baby came along also tells me that she is a highly strung, anxious cat by nature and for this reason more predisposed to this type of problem.
If fed in the area for a day or so cats will not usually toilet anywhere near their food bowl.
As it is a completely noninvasive treatment with no side effects i suggest you try this before any oral medication.
If this is not the plug in that you have already tried i recommend you try this next and you will need to allow at least 30 days for full effect to be seen.
You would need to see your veterinarian for a prescription.
Cats often need to be on this drug for at least 6 months and sometimes longer but the dose can often be reduced to every second or third day dosing.
The tablets are also very small and cats usually just eat them mixed with their food.
I hope this helps, please let me know if you have any further questions.
